Hello all! One of the many benefits of living in this area is the ease in which we can travel to nearby cities and partake in their local events. After a bit of research I have compiled a short list of events that might be of some interest to expectant moms, new moms, and young families. This is by no means exhaustive, so if you know of an event that would be of interest to readers that is not listed, feel free to add it in the comments section!

Story Time – Elkhart Public Library – Cleveland Branch

March 3, 2016 @ 10:00 A.M.

This series of programs is for children ages 2-5 who are not yet in kindergarten. Children will learn how to interact with their peers through story time, songs, finger plays, and other activities. This program is designed to prepare children for kindergarten.

Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn – The Lerner Theater

March 4 and 5 @ 7:30 P.M. and March 6 @ 3:00 P.M.

The Lerner Theater will present the story of Huckleberry Finn and his friendship with Jim, set to bluegrass and country style music.

The Little Mermaid – Southwestern Michigan College

March 4, 2016 @ 7:30 P.M.

Additional performances on March 5, 11, and 12 @ 7:30 P.M., and March 6 and 13 @ 2 P.M. SMC will be presenting Disney’s musical classic for only $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and free admission for those under 18.

Magic Moments: Draw and Paint Animals – Elkhart Public Library

March 17, 2016 @ 4:45 P.M.

This is part of a series of sessions which teach children to draw, paint, etc., using a multitude of different techniques. Each session will focus on a specific project. Children should wear old clothes or bring a t-shirt to wear over their clothes. Registration is required.

Babysitting with Confidence – Lakeland Hospital

March 19, 2016 @ 8:30 P.M.

This course will teach students how to safely and successfully care for young children. Participants must either be 11 years old or in fifth grade to register. Reservations are required.

Sugar Camp Days – Bendix Woods County Park

March 19 and 20, 2016 @ 8:30 A.M.

Participants can enjoy a pancake and sausage breakfast put on by the New Carlisle Lion’s Club, watch sap cook into syrup, see the sugar bush, purchase goods made with real maple syrup, and listen to music. The cost to get in is $8 a vehicle.

Talk with your Baby Class – Robinson Community Learning Center

March 23, 2016 through April 20, 2016 from 6:30 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. (This is a weekly event, occurring on Wednesdays)

This class covers the importance of talking and reading to children from ages 0-3. Free books and parenting materials will be handed out. Snacks and child care will be provided.

Great Golden Egg Hunt – St. Joseph County Parks

March 26, 2016 @ 10:00 A.M.

Ferretti/Baugo Creek, Bendix Woods, and St. Patrick’s County Parks and Spicer Lake Nature Preserve Parks. Park staff will hide one egg alongside a trail at each of the county parks. Participants can search for the egg as they walk the trails. The golden egg can be redeemed for a summer fun pack of canoe rental, disc golf, and gate entry coupons. The cost is free.

Sibling Class – IU Health of Goshen

One Saturday a month @ 9:00 A.M.

This class works with children ages 2-10 in regards to welcoming a new sibling into the family. Children are encouraged to bring a doll or stuffed animal so that they can practice feeding, diapering, and holding a newborn baby. A snack is provided.

Traditional Childbirth Education Series – IU Health of Goshen

Tuesday and Thursday Evenings @ 6:00 P.M.

This four-class series discusses the third trimester of pregnancy, labor and birth, medical interventions, vaginal and cesarean births, the postpartum period, baby care basics, and breastfeeding. Labor rehearsal and a tour of the OB unit is included.

This class is for boys and girls thirteen years of age. It teaches skills such as babysitting business, basic child care, and how to handle emergencies.

One evening per month @ 6:00 P.M.

Expectant parents might be interested in this class as it explores topics such as latching and positioning, when to feed, and input and output. A tour of the delivery unit is included.
